April - June 2004
April 1 Forlì, Italy - concert with  pianist Lorenzo Bavaj in the Palafiera. The entire proceeds from the concert went to the Italian cancer research institute IRST. With four encores and three standing ovations from an audience of 4000 people, Romagna Oggi described the evening as "exaltation".
April 3 Hamburg, Germany - ceremony to lay the first foundation stone for the José Carreras-Zentrums für Immun- und Gentherapie at the Universität des Saarlandes. The centre is being built with a donation of 1.6 million Euros from the Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie-Stiftung. In the photo (right) Carreras fills a 'time capsule' to be placed in the foundation.

April 3 Saarbrücken, Germany - encores and flowers. The German tour concludes with a recital in the Saarlandhalle with the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano and pianist Lorenzo Bavaj.

April 6 Ostrava, Czech Republic - concert in the Vitkovice Arena with soprano Mi-Hae Park and the Janákova Filharmonie orchestra conducted by David Gimenéz. The photo (right) shows Carreras on his arrival in the Czech Republic by private plane on April 5th.

April 14-18 Busseto, Italy - serves as President of the Jury of the 44th Concorso Internazionale Voci Verdiane. The photo (right) shows Carreras in consultation with other judges during the finals of the competition, won this year by Russian soprano Irina Lungu.

April 20 Modena, Italy - a visit to the Maserati car factory. Shown here, Carreras behind the wheel of the new Maserati Quattroporte.

April 21 Parma, Italy - tenor soloist in the Mozart Requiem (K626) with David Gimenéz conducting the Orchestra Fondazione Toscanini. The concert was repeated on April 22 in the Cathedral of  Piacenza.

May 5 Barcelona, Spain - Spanish launch of Energia with a presentation at the Palau de la Música. Accompanied at the piano by Enrique Ricci, Carreras sang two selections from the CD,  'Na sera e maggio' and 'Un núvol blanc', and gave a press conference. In the photo (right), Carreras with Lluís Llach at the launch.

May 15 Catanzaro, Italy - concert in the Teatro Politeama with pianist Lorenzo Bavaj and the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano.  Carreras was showered with flowers at the end of the performance.  "Encores, ovations, and heart-stopping songs. The Spanish tenor galvanizes the Politeama" wrote Tommaso Migliaccio in La Gazetta del Sud.

May 18 Tarragona, Spain - video recording of 'Andaluza' from the Roman amphitheatre in Tarragona (right) with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallés. The video was to be screened as part of a special presentation at the Arena di Verona, La Corona di Pietra, on August 4, 2004, .
May 25 Barcelona, Spain - sings the Catalan Hymn «Els Segadors». at the opening of the Catalunya vs. Brasil football match at Camp Nou Stadium. The Diari de Tarragona reported that the hymn was sung by Carreras "with  great emotion and power and received a large ovation from the crowd". On May 29 he returned to the stadium to sing 'Nessun Dorma' at the start of a charity match in honour of retiring Barcelona player, and personal friend, Hristo Stoichkov.

June 2 Moscow, Russia - showered with flowers at a pre-concert news conference.

June 3 Moscow, Russia - concert in the International Performing Arts Center accompanied by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia with David Gimenez conducting.
June 6 Carmel, California - recital in the Sunset Center with pianist Lorenzo Bavaj. Reported the Monterey Herald : "The audience greeted Carreras with a standing ovation, the first of two he received that evening."  In the photo (right) Carreras smiles with his hosts after the concert. On June 9 he gave a further concert in Saratoga, California at the Garden Theater of Villa Montalvo.

June 11 Chicago, Illinois - private concert at the Chicago Lyric Opera for the 43rd annual International Achievement Summit.  After the concert, attended by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan and other recipients of the Academy of Achievement awards, Carreras was presented the Academy's Golden Plate award.

June 26 Dresden, Germany - open air concert in the Semperoper Theaterplatz with soprano Ofelia Sala and the Dresdner Philharmonie, David Giménez conducting. The photo (right) shows Carreras arriving at Dresden airport by private plane on the day before the concert.
