January 9 Altea, Spain. Receives an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Universidad Miguel Hernández for "his extraordinary artistic career and his humanitarian role as the head of the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation."  On January 10, Carreras visited with young cancer patients in Altea and gave a benefit recital in the Palau Centre d'Arts.

January 17 Boca Raton, Florida. Start of a three city Florida tour with the "Music in the Moonlight" Gala at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheatre. Further recitals followed on January 19 in Naples and January 21 in Clearwater.

March 11 Leer, Germany. Benefit concert for the

March 21 Horsens, Denmark. Concert in the Horsens Ny Teater with pianist Lorenzo Bavaj and the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano.

March 27 Leipzig, Germany. Awarded the BILD-Osgar for his charity work at an evening ceremony in the Neuen Rathaus. Other prize winners this year included former Israeli Prime Minister, Shimon Peres. Earlier in the day, Carreras visited leukemia patients at the Universitätsklinik Leipzig.

March 30 Milan, Italy. Awarded the 2003 Premio Juvena of Switzerland - Milano per la Musica at a ceremony in the Teatro Filodrammatici, followed by a concert in his honour. Past recipients of the prize have included the conductors, Giulini and Chailly, and sopranos Simoniato and Ricciarelli.
